London’s Weather by Seasons

Winter (December – February):

enjoy London during its frosty season

Winter in London can be very cold, but despite this it’s not too often that we get snow. Average temperatures range between 2°C (35°F) to 8°C (46°F). Expect shorter daylight hours and a good deal of grey skies and rain. It can also be super windy which will leave you feeling even colder!

Spring (March – May):

Take a stroll in Hyde Park during Spring

Spring in London is one of the milder times to visit, as temperatures rise and the city’s flowers begin to bloom (make sure you check out our floral London guide for all the best flower hunting spots). Average temperatures range from 5°C (41°F) to 15°C (59°F), though early spring can still feel cool, with rain showers being very common. Do come prepared for some good weather too though as it can get pretty warm in May!

Summer (June – August):

London summers range between being mild and sometimes warm. Daytime temperatures typically reach between 14°C (57°F) and 24°C (75°F), with occasional heatwaves pushing above 30°C (86°F). In 2022, we even saw a drastic heat wave that left our capital in over 40°C heat. Rain is less common, but it’s always good to carry an umbrella, just in case.

Autumn (September – November):

Rainfall picks up, especially in October and November, and misty mornings become common.

Month-by-Month Breakdown:

January:

  • Average Temperature: 2°C to 8°C

February:

  • Average Temperature: 3°C to 9°C
  • In February the days start to get a little longer again. Frosty mornings are common, but February can also bring some crisp, sunny days where you may even just be in  at shirt and jeans. Rain is very common, but it’s not as wet as later months.

March:

  • Average Temperature: 5°C to 12°C
  • Early spring brings milder weather, but it can still be chilly. March is known for its unpredictable mix of sun and showers, making it a transitional month for London’s climate.

April:

  • Spring is in full bloom by April, with parks and gardens beginning to burst with colour. However, April showers are infamous, so it’s wise to keep an umbrella on hand.

May:

  • May is one of the best months for weather in London, with longer, sunnier days and mild temperatures. Rain is less frequent, and it’s an ideal time to explore outdoor attractions like Kew Gardens.

August:

  • Average Temperature: 14°C to 24°C
  • Similar to July, August is warm and ideal for outdoor activities. There may be occasional rain and heat waves. This is festival season, and the weather usually cooperates (but beware that sometimes it can get a bit muddy).

September:

  • Average Temperature: 12°C to 20°C
  • September still offers a taste of heat, but temperatures begin to cool down, especially in the second half of the month. London’s weather is generally pleasant, making it a good time to visit without the summer crowds.

November:

  • November is when London starts to feel quite cold, with grey skies and damp conditions becoming more common. The days are short and dark, and rain increases, but the Christmas lights begin to brighten up the streets.
